Impure- A short film about period taboo

Impure- A film about period taboos
Many cultures across the world still believe in period taboos and women being impure on the three days of their menstrual cycle. Growing up in India as a girl, I have observed this- women being isolated in outhouses, living in poor hygiene , not being able to cook or pray, little girls forbidden from going to school while they are menstruating. These theories are baseless, and women besides having to bear the pain during their menstrual cycle, have to deal with ill treatment from the society as well.

The title poster of the film, with Impure written across a smudged reddish hue signifies the blood, and the flowers show how women are feminine and give birth, yet it is an irony that the very cycle that determines the purity of procreation, is considered impure.

The film captures the journey of a girl through her menstrual cycle, she is confined to her own room and has to spend time with herself. Three days are being tracked with her in a calendar and the red marker is significant of her menstruating days. Having to eat all meals in isolation, and being provide meals that abide by the taboo, rather than containing essential nutrients required to cater to the body's needs. The same set of clothes across three days refers to the poor hygiene conditions the girl has to live in for this duration, since showers, changing of clothes and wearing jewellery is not allowed. Staring into pace, watching the clock tick, playing games for one, are all activities that the girl has to occupy herself with during these days.
